‘watcher | imprint | shimmer | growth', an interactive installation, melds the realms of art and technology into one cohesive experience. Developed during the Tantrum Artist Residency in 2023 in Merewether, Newcastle, this project was an exploration of immersive audiovisual experiences. The installation was launched on 24th June 2023 with collaboration from music producers Gregor McMurray and JHL, and under the mentorship of Kit Webster.

The installation, which debuted on 24th June 2023 at the Tantrum studio, consists of four interactive scenes:

Watcher: This scene features an eye that follows the viewer around the room. As you approach, the pupil dilates and targets you, flashing red lights and revealing a secret through dancing colors in its reflection. The scene transitions from a continuous melody to a pulsing bass note with a sharp metallic noise as you get closer, utilizing Kinect technology for tracking and interaction.

Imprint: Here, the concept is a surface that responds to touch, similar to pin art toys. Ambient noise layered with glassy sounds by JHL is triggered by the speed at which the surface is cleared. Significant changes to the surface activate a reversing glassy sound and a generated chord swell.

Shimmer: Inspired by the local beaches, this scene is an interactive rockpool that changes with the viewer's movements. Fast movements alter the continuously generated music to a higher pitched, more chaotic version, and the ceiling projector enhances this effect by simulating the reflection of light on water.

Growth: Exploring L-systems, this scene features a seed that grows differently with each interaction. Moving your hand up and down triggers changes in pitch and light, with a ceiling projector creating a colorful wave as the seed grows.

Each scene is designed to be interactive, with specific prompts for the audience to engage with the installation. The setup includes Kinect for motion tracking, a surround sound system, four DMX lights, and two projectors, all controlled by a computer. The audience is encouraged to discover hidden gestures to unlock a special song and light show in each scene.

The Tantrum residency provided support, mentorship, and the necessary space and equipment for Ingle to develop and showcase this captivating artwork.
